Philippe May Biography -- Biographie

Philippe May was born on October 8th, 1970. He grew up in a small village in the Swiss Alps, called Versegeres. Versegeres is located in the valley below the famous ski resort Verbier. Although the rest of Philippe's family are not big skiers, it seemed from an early age Philippe was bound for the slopes.

Like many other youngsters, Philippe had dreams of being a rock star in a heavy metal band. In the early 80's with KISS and Metalica as his idols, Philippe and his brother Michelle started a rock band. Philippe was the star drummer. After a few years of playing and touring successfully, Philippe decided to move on and get more serious about his true calling; skiing.

Philippe was a competitive racer in all alpine events, but his favorite was downhill. It seemed from the very start May had a need for speed. After a bad knee injury, he was forced to stop all sports for four years. Philippe was determined to return to the ski world. With a lot of hard work, and physical therapy, Philippe was able to overcome his injury. He returned to the ski world and acquired his ski teaching license, and continued to coach youngsters in alpine racing.

Four years ago, Philippe got more involved in speed skiing, traveling to other areas to participate in World Cup races with World Class Athletes. It was a struggle at the beginning. May was used to the "Alpine" way of thinking for race preparation. In this event, Philippe was a rookie and had to start from the beginning. In addition to having entirely different equipment, Philippe had to adjust mentally as well. Philippe found a niche in a truly invigorating and exhilarating ski event known as speed skiing.

After several years of fighting and competing among the most elite athletes in this event, Philippe May has conquered many goals.  Last year Philippe was successful in winning the title of Swiss Speed Ski Champion.  Philippe won the Swiss title again this year.  He also accomplished an amazing feat in speed skiing.  Not only did Philippe achieve a personal record of 151mph, he is the new FIS World Cup Champion. 

Philippe is continuing his training during the off season.  In addition to weight lifting and cross training sports, Philippe is coaching the Junior alpine team.  While this helps with his physical needs, May also works as a master wood craftsman and designer in homes around Verbier to satisfy him conceptually.  Philippe is looking forward to another competitive season for 2003.

Il a grandit dans un petit village des alpes Suisse nommé Versegères.Versegères se situe dans la vallée de Bagnes tout près de la fameuse station de ski de Verbier.Ne venant pas d' une famille de grands skieurs Philippe a cependant dès son plus jeune age été attiré par les pentes enneigées.

Comme beaucoup de jeunes de son age, Philippe a d'abord rêvé de devenir une rock star. Dans les année 80, Kiss et Metallica furent ses idoles. Philippe et son frère Michel formèrent alors un groupe dont Philippe fut le batteur. Après plusieurs années de répétitions et de concerts, Philippe décida de se concentrer sur sa plus grande passion, le SKI.

Philippe a suivi les étapes de la filière de ski alpin. Sa passion pour la vitesse étant déjà présente, la descente était sa discipline favorite. Après une grave blessure au genou et une interruption forcée de tout activité sportive pour 4 ans. Philippe était déterminé a revenir dans le monde du ski. Grâce a beaucoup de travail et de motivation, il recoupera physiquement et fit son retour en passant son brevet de professeur de ski et en entraînant les jeunes de son ski club.

Durant ces 4 dernière année, Philippe s'est de plus en plus impliqué en ski de vitesse en participant aux manches de coupe du monde dans plusieurs pays se mesurant ainsi aux meilleurs athlètes mondiaux de la spécialité. Après quelque temps d'adaptation, Philippe s'est amélioré physiquement,techniquement et mentalement. Ces 2 dernières année, il a réussi a pleinement s'exprimé dans ce sport exaltent qu'est le ski de vitesse.

L'année dernier,Philippe a atteint plusieurs de ses buts. Il a gagné le classement a points de la coupe de Suisse et a réussi a se classé dans le top 10 mondial a toutes les courses de la saison.

Philippe continue sa préparation durant l'entre saison. En plus des séances de musculation et de résistance et d'endurance, Philippe entraîne aussi les jeunes compétiteurs alpins. Le reste de son temps est consacré a son métier de menuisier et a son poste au sein du golf club de Verbier.

Philippe se réjouis d'une saison 2002 qu'il espère très compétitive.
